THE CRACK OF DOOM - Sound of Ankh (CD) (MOS Records)
German band The Crack Of Doom claim to have found a gap in the
goth/dark wave scene and that gap is called symphonic-gothic rock.
The truth is that I had the same in mind before reading the bio as I thought
it was so bizarre to hear Pink Floyd-atmospheres and Black Sabbath-riffs in
a musicstyle that oan be described as early Umbra Et Imagio or L'Ame
Immortelle (for people who are not that specialized in the gothscene they
are both quite big in this scene). The band can't be pressed into one
dimensior. (so it's not another band who are ripping off The Sisters Of
Mercy or The Banshees till you get bored of it) as they enrich their music
with lots of different Instruments (it goes from military drums on 'The
Stone Thing' to didgeridoos on opener Rose Dance). The band say their album
is a collection of variable situations and experiences of human life with
all its consequences that will be shown in a special manner. Well, they
really do it in a special manner as at times this album sounds like a
ritual at where both God and the devil are invited Darkwave-lovers (and
lots of others) can easily fall in love with this dark piece of beauty...
